Postponed: San Gorgonio Backpacking, June 19-21

Posted on Jun 18 2015 - 2:00pm

Update 6/18/2015 at 1:00:
Due to the "Lake Fire" wildfire, all of San Gorgonio trails are closed, and permits were recalled. We have explored the possibility of doing a hike on Mt. San Jacinto but feel that we are at high risk of having unsafe air quality.

With regret, I have to call off the trip for this weekend. We will look to reschedule in a couple of months.

Updated: Backpacking Trip Info

Posted on May 15 2015 - 7:20am

New important information posted May 13: please read in detail.

Due to forecasted snow and below freezing temperatures for Mt. San Jacinto, we have changed this trip to a new location. We will still be meeting at WINCO at 7:00 on Saturday, May 16th,(Corner of Margarita and Winchester) but will be backpacking in San Mateo Canyon Wilderness, in the Santa Ana mountains just north of Santa Rosa Plateau. We will be camping at Fisherman's Camp. Since this is lower elevation it will be much warmer.

On Saturday morning, Mr. Wheeler will still require (1) BSA Consent form for event, (2) Form A and B if you have not already submitted one to the troop this year. Note that there will not be a fee for camping at this location.

Key changes:
-No fee for camping
-Pack in all the water that you will need for drinking and for cooking. We have no guarantee of availability of water. For most, this will mean 3L or more. Adults, please help new scouts plan for this and help them carry the extra weight. Ask Mr. Wheeler if you have questions.
-Forecasted highs near 70, lows near 50
-10% chance of rain on Saturday (and it is almost sure to be wet from rain on Thursday & Friday). This means that having a waterproof tarp / tent will be important. Be prepared for the possibility of rain (waterproof poncho or similar.

-We will still be having two groups.
-Group 1 will enter at the Tenaja Trailhead. We will backpack in about 3.5 miles to camp. Sunday we will take the same route out.
-Group 2 will enter at the Candy store on Hwy 74. Hike in will be 9 miles, hike out will be 13 miles.
-Drivers (for both groups) need to have a forest adventure pass. If you are in group 1, you will need to purchase this ahead of time since it will not be available at the trailhead. This can be found at sporting goods stores-$5 for one day or $30 for an annual pass.

Please contact Mr. Wheeler or Mr. Levinter if you have additional questions.

Old Info:

Reminder: Due to Mr. Wheeler before trip is (1) Attached BSA Consent form for event, (2) Attached Form A & B if you have not already submitted one to the troop this year, (3) $10 campground fee. These can be brought the morning of the trip.
